Facebook Bug Secretly Switches iPhone Camera On Without User’s Permission.

Apple iPhone users are being warned about a Facebook issue that apparently allows the app to activate your camera as you scroll your feed.

Facebook says the strange behavior is caused by a bug that was added to the code by accident and that there is no indication that photos or videos are being sent to its servers. The company claims an update has already been submitted to Apple that should remove it.

The issue, discovered by web designer Joshua Maddox, who tweeted a video of himself tapping on a photo in Facebook on iOS, then pulling it to the side ever so slightly to reveal his phone’s camera in the background, instead of the app.

Maddux and TNW both suggest that the issue could be tied to a specific version of iOS 13.2.2, as they were not able to replicate it in other places, though at least one other user claimed they could detect it on iOS 12.4.1.

Facebook VP Guy Rosen tweeted that Facebook does not believe the bug is aware of the bug and is working on a fix. He also said that Facebook has not found that the bug has created any accidental postings, suggesting the bug is relatively benign.

Facebook said:
We recently discovered that version 244 of the Facebook iOS app would incorrectly launch in landscape mode. In fixing that issue last week in v246 (launched on November 8th) we inadvertently introduced a bug that caused the app to partially navigate to the camera screen adjacent to News Feed when users tapped on photos.
We have seen no evidence of photos or videos being uploaded due to this bug. We’re submitting the fix for this to Apple today.

Still, Since a randomly opening camera is a huge privacy risk, I think we can all agree that it’s better to play it safe and stop letting Facebook use your phone camera for a while.

To revoke Facebook’s access to your phone’s camera, go to the settings app, then click on “Privacy,” then “Camera.” In that menu, make sure that Facebook is toggled off.

That’s it. Obviously, with the camera turned off you will not be able to take pictures through Facebook, but you can still add images to posts or Stories from your Camera Roll.
